From the historic districts of Uptown and Dilworth to the contemporary developments of Mint Hill, Ballantyne and Lake Norman, Charlotte neighborhoods offer something for everyone. The wide variety of architecture, amenities and distinct neighborhood atmospheres coupled with a strong hometown spirit has recently designated Charlotte #1 ‘Most Livable City’. Charlotte is also known for its strong regional planning, leadership, and dedication to preserving its historic past.
Charlotte Neighborhoods
UPTOWN: Charlotte's downtown center is known as Uptown. Uptown was divided into four political wards in the 1800's. The 1st and 4th Wards are largely residential today, with the 4th Ward housing much of Charlotte's remaining Queen Anne architecture. Uptown's center is 'The Square', the intersection of Trade and Tryon Streets. Uptown features most of the city's skyscrapers, plus headquarters for both city and county government. Uptown Landmarks: Discovery Place, Johnson & Wales University, the Mint Museum of Craft & Design, Bank of America Stadium and the Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Uptown is in the midst of a developmental boom, with numerous construction, retail and cultural projects.SOUTH END: Named for main thoroughfare South Boulevard, South End sits just below Uptown. South End's manufacturing past is evident in its architecture, with former industrial buildings now converted into trendy loft condominiums, offices and shops.
DILWORTH is Charlotte's original 'streetcar suburb', located southwest of the
original city limits and centered around East Boulevard. Boasting historic turn of the century architecture, a traditional neighborhood feel, and charming Latta Park, Dilworth has enjoyed much recent urban renewal and is a popular neighborhood for young professionals.ELIZABETH: Developed in the early 1900's, this historic former suburb was named after Elizabeth College, and is home to Independence Park, Charlotte's first public park.
MYERS PARK was developed in the 1920's by Boston's John Nolen, who conceived wide sweeping avenues lined with towering oaks. Originally a streetcar suburb, Myers Park is home to some of the city's grandest houses.
Adjacent to Myers Park, PLAZA MIDWOOD has enjoyed a recent revival that has given the neighborhood a bohemian feel. Lively and demographically eclectic, Plaza Midwood includes a significant gay and lesbian population.
NODA, Charlotte's Arts District, is situated two miles north of Uptown, on and around North Davidson St. Formerly a textile community, NoDa has become a burgeoning arts destination for residents and visitors alike.
BALLANTYNE is a booming mixed-use community situated in the southernmost part of Charlotte, along the North and South Carolina border. It features upscale residential and commercial development.
